The Power of Anticipation: Transform Your Everyday Life
My son, Summit, is the king of anticipation. At five years old, he’s always got something he’s looking forward to. In the 15 days leading up to his birthday, he asked every single morning, “Is today my birthday?” And now, his excitement has shifted to the 100-day party at school — something he’s been talking about for what seems to be a hundred days... Watching him has made me realize: anticipation is one of the keys to a fuller life. It brings a sense of adventure to everyday life.
In fact, one of the reflection questions I ask every month is: What’s something you’re looking forward to? Anticipation keeps us engaged, motivated, and excited, whether it’s for something big — like a long-awaited vacation — or something small — like a date night or a weekend adventure. Here’s why anticipation is so powerful:
It Adds Excitement to the Mundane
When you have something on the horizon, even the most routine days feel more meaningful. Knowing that you’re inching closer to a fun event makes the everyday grind feel purposeful. Tasks that might seem boring — like finishing up work, getting through meetings, or even grocery shopping — become stepping stones toward that thing you’re looking forward to.It Helps You Savor the Small Things
Anticipation isn’t just for vacations or big milestones. It teaches us to appreciate and look forward to the little joys in life. A simple coffee date with a friend, a family movie night, or an afternoon sauna session (little glimpse into my life…) can feel just as exciting when we make the effort to anticipate them.It Provides a Sense of Stability in Tough Times
If you’re going through a difficult season — whether it’s stress at work, parenting challenges, or just a rough patch in life — having something to look forward to can be a light at the end of the tunnel. Putting a fun event on the calendar, even if it’s just two weeks away, can serve as a mental boost, helping you push through the hard moments. It Encourages Intentionality
When we intentionally plan things to look forward to, we create a life that’s rich with adventure, connection, and joy. Instead of just letting life happen, we shape it. Whether it’s scheduling a weekend getaway, planning a surprise for your kids, or setting a personal goal, anticipation pushes us to be more intentional about how we spend our time.
How to Cultivate More Anticipation in Your Life
Put something on the calendar – If there’s nothing to look forward to, create it! Schedule a game night with friends, plan a mini road trip, or block off a day to do some of the things you enjoy the most.
Look ahead at the month – What are some things you can get excited about? Even simple moments, like a free evening to read or a favorite show coming out, can be sources of joy.
Use anticipation to navigate tough seasons – If life feels overwhelming, give yourself something to hold onto. Plan a small treat or reward in the near future to help keep you going.
Right now, I’m anticipating a 10-year anniversary vacation with Taylor in May, but I’m also excited for smaller things — like a double date with friends this weekend, an upcoming hangout with some of my close friends, and one-on-one time with our youngest son while our older kids get to go on a vacation with their grandparents. Big or small, anticipation makes life better.
So, what’s something you’re looking forward to? If nothing comes to mind, take five minutes and put something on the calendar. Your future self will thank you.
